Background: 

World heart day is celebrated every year on 29 September to raise awareness on cardiovascular diseases (CVD). CVDs account for nearly half of all NCD deaths making it the number one killer disease worldwide. The world heart federation is a global organization which commemorates this day by different campaigns and activities targeted to fight against CVD burden and inspire to encourage heart healthy living across the world. This year the theme “use heart for every heart” is used as the message to reach as many individuals as possible to achieve cardiovascular health for every heart.

Awareness campaign:

To celebrate this day an awareness campaign was conducted at Hindu college of management with inputs from Dr. C. Padmavathi Devi, Principal, Guntur Medical College. The event was started with a brief introductory and welcome speech by Dr. Ramana Singaraju, Principal, Hindu college of management and the significance of this year’s theme was delivered by Dr.Sita Rama.A, Professor & Head, Dept. of community medicine. The current burden of CVDs and the reasons for premature heart attacks in the young was discussed by Dr. Anil Kumar, Assistant professor. A ppt presentation with the campaign tools was designed by the 3rd year MBBS students and the media presentation was done by Dr Hani Rajesh.A, Assistant professor, Dept. of community medicine. The end note was delivered by Dr Arun Kumar.B, Assistant professor highlighting the importance of early recognition of heart disease and how to differentiate it from other diseases which mimic heart attacks, like acid peptic disease. The faculty from the host college actively engaged in this event and encouraged the students to clarify prevailing doubts. The discussion was interactive and all the students participated enthusiastically.

Acknowledgement:

The campaign ended successfully under the guidance of Dr P.Radha Kumari, Professor, Dept of Community Medicine and active encouragement from Dr. C. Padmavathi Devi, Principal, Guntur Medical College. All of the faculty and students expressed their gratitude and stressed this event has served a good purpose as the college was about to start health management course as a new stream.
